Election Results Reporting Subgroup

This subgroup is creating a common data format for election results reporting. The current documents are located here and at

There are two phases to this effort:

  • Phase 1 - create initial version 1.0 specification and use as possible in 2015-2016 elections
  • Phase 2 - based on feedback from Phase 1, create version 2.0 of specification
Phase 2 also involves creation of a repository of identifiers for geo-political geographies and for the most common types of contests.

Subgroup chairs: Sarah Whitt, John Wack

Mailing List

The mailing list for this subgroup is election-reporting@nist.gov. Only members of the list can send email to the list. To get on this mailing list, send email to voting@nist.gov. To get on any other of the mailing lists associated with the voting public working groups, see the link on the main page.

Current Status

The version 1 specification is almost complete, in its last stages of NIST internal review, and will be issued as a NIST Special Publication. The version 2 effort will start in Oct, 2015, and will focus on other changes TBD. The State of Ohio is using a slightly older version of the version 1 schema for reporting its election results; see the example file below from OH for its Nov 3, 2015 election results.
