Voting Glossary

This page is dedicated to development of a glossary of voting-related terms and/or terms as they are used in voting. A glossary is needed so that we use terms consistently. In voting, different states often use terms differently, but if we are to write material that will be useful, we must all use the terms consistently. Thus, the glossary is where we can define terms using a preferred definition, but also include information as necessary if the terms are used differently in certain states. For example, we will use the term precinct consistently and not use other terms such as box or ward to mean the same thing, however in the definition for precinct we can note that certain states use box or ward to mean the same thing. The initial glossary was created from the definitions in the EAC VVSG 1.0 and then modified with definitions and updates from the 2007 TGDC VVSG Recommendations to the EAC and from voting standards work within IEEE and NIST. There is a page per term, below.

To add to or modify the glossary, see Guidance for Adding or Modifying Terms and Definitions. If there is a term missing, you can consult one of the following links to see if the term is defined and then add it to this glossary:

To create a new term for the glossary:

  1. Follow the steps for creating a new page and select the GlossaryTermTemplate when selecting a page template in step 4 of that process, instead of using the usual GenericTopicTemplate.
  2. Edit this Glossary page by adding a link to your newly created term page in the appropriate section below where terms are listed alphabetically.

Glossary Term Pages

  • Pages for the glossary terms are listed below.
  • Eventually, a cleaned-up, digested version of this glossary will be made available as well.
